Custom Deck Construction & Specialized Cable Railing in Marietta

When Marietta homeowners want a deck that looks modern and lasts for decades, cable railing for decks is the upgrade that makes the difference. Our crew specializes in pairing premium Deckorators composite decking with stainless steel cable railing systems — giving you unobstructed views, clean lines, and virtually zero maintenance.

Every cable railing deck we build in Marietta starts with an on-site consultation at your home. We evaluate your lot's grade, drainage patterns, sun exposure, and existing landscaping to design a deck that fits the site — not a cookie-cutter plan forced onto your backyard. Whether you're in a wooded lot off Whitlock Avenue, a neighborhood near Marietta Square, or a hillside property in East Cobb, we tailor the layout, elevation, and railing configuration to your specific conditions.

As Certified Deckorators Pro installers, we use premium composite decking materials engineered to resist rot, fading, and warping in Georgia's brutal humidity. We pair these surfaces with 316 Marine Grade Stainless Steel cable railing — the same corrosion-resistant alloy used in coastal construction. The result is a deck that still looks sharp ten years from now without the annual staining, power washing, and board replacement that wood demands. Our structural engineering meets or exceeds Cobb County building codes, with engineered footings, pressure-treated subframes, and hidden fastener systems throughout.

Full-service design means we handle everything: CAD layout with multi-level platform options, integrated LED lighting plans, built-in seating and planter configurations, and material selection guidance. We pull Cobb County permits, manage HOA architectural review submissions, and schedule all required inspections. You get one team from design through final walkthrough — no subcontractor juggling.

Our Build Process

The Need Construction Process for New Decks

Building a custom deck in Marietta isn't something you should have to project-manage yourself. From the first site visit to your final walkthrough, we handle every phase — permitting, material sourcing, construction, and inspection — so you get a finished deck without the headaches.

Phase one is an on-site consultation at your Marietta home. We measure the build area, evaluate soil conditions and grading, check your home's ledger board attachment points, and talk through your priorities — budget, material preferences, timeline, and how you plan to use the space. If you're in a neighborhood like East Cobb's Indian Hills, the subdivisions off Dallas Highway, or anywhere near Kennesaw Mountain, we've likely built on similar lots and can show you photos of comparable projects.

Phase two is custom CAD design and material selection. We produce a detailed layout showing dimensions, elevation changes, railing placement, stair locations, and lighting positions. This is where you choose between wood and composite decking, pick your cable railing post style, and finalize color selections. We walk you through the cost-benefit tradeoffs of each option with real numbers, not sales pitches. You approve the final design before any materials are ordered.

Phase three covers permitting and HOA coordination. Cobb County requires building permits for deck construction, and many Marietta neighborhoods require HOA architectural review on top of that. We prepare and submit everything — structural drawings, material specifications, site plans — and track approval status so you're not chasing paperwork. Phase four is construction: our GAF and Deckorators certified crew handles the full build, from footer excavation through decking installation, cable railing tensioning, and final cleanup. We schedule Cobb County inspections and walk you through everything at completion.

"It's tough to find people you feel like you can trust not to try and get over on you. I spoke with Wes about work I needed to get done and was surprised at his level of honesty and professionalism. Putting that with the word of mouth on the quality of his work... and I wouldn't/won't hesitate to work with him on my next project."

"We had a major project to be undertaken. Need construction to the rescue!! We had water damage to some of the framing on the home exterior and major deck demo and rebuild. They handled it all. I had some unique requests that I wanted installed on my deck. The DekDrain rain system along with the full composite Dekorators Summit boards and railing with a cocktail rail was our desire. We also had to have a concrete patio area below. Wes and his team made it all happen. The subframe was built with better materials that any other contractor had even offered and I was impressed with that alone. I have no doubt that hurricane force winds would have no effect on this fortress of a deck. Even the city inpectors were wowed by the build quality. The craftsmanship and finishing of the final product is top tier. They will take the time to make sure it's your dream come true."

FAQ

Marietta Deck & Cable Railing FAQ

Common questions from Marietta homeowners about deck construction, cable railing costs, and materials.

What is cable railing for decks?

Cable railing for decks uses horizontal or vertical runs of stainless steel cables tensioned between metal or wood posts instead of traditional wood pickets or aluminum balusters. The result is a clean, modern look that preserves your backyard views — you can see straight through the railing to your yard, treeline, or pool. Cable railing is also extremely durable and low-maintenance compared to wood pickets, which rot, warp, and need repainting in Georgia's humidity. We install 316 Marine Grade Stainless Steel cable systems on our Marietta deck projects, which resist corrosion for decades.

How much does cable railing for decks cost in Marietta?

Cable railing for decks in Marietta typically runs $60 to $120 per linear foot installed, depending on the post material and cable grade. We use 316 Marine Grade Stainless Steel cables as standard — the same alloy used in coastal construction — because it holds up significantly better in Georgia's humid climate than cheaper 304-grade alternatives. Post options range from powder-coated aluminum on the lower end to custom hardwood or brushed stainless steel posts on the higher end. For a typical 200-square-foot deck, expect the railing portion to run $3,000 to $7,000 depending on configuration and corner count.

How long does it take to build a custom deck in Marietta?

Most custom deck builds in Marietta take 2 to 4 weeks from footer pour to final walkthrough, depending on scope and complexity. A straightforward single-level composite deck with cable railing is closer to 2 weeks. Multi-level platforms, built-in seating, integrated lighting, or structural complexity like hillside builds push closer to 4 weeks. Cobb County permit turnaround adds 1 to 2 weeks on the front end, and weather — especially during Georgia's spring rain season — can shift the timeline by a few days. We build buffer into every project schedule so you're not caught off guard.

Do I need a permit for a deck in Marietta, GA?

Yes. Cobb County requires a building permit for any new deck construction, and most structural modifications to existing decks also require permits. Decks over 200 square feet, decks attached to the house, and any elevated deck over 30 inches off the ground all trigger permit requirements. Need Construction handles the entire permit process — we prepare code-compliant structural drawings, submit the application to Cobb County, and schedule all required inspections. If your neighborhood has an HOA, we manage that architectural review submission too.

Is composite decking better than wood for Georgia humidity?

For Marietta's hot, humid summers, composite decking outperforms pressure-treated wood on every maintenance metric. Composite won't rot, warp, splinter, or grow mold the way wood does when exposed to Georgia's moisture levels year after year. You never need to stain, seal, or sand it — just wash it down once or twice a year. The tradeoff is upfront cost: composite runs 30-40% more than pressure-treated lumber at installation. But most Marietta homeowners we work with choose composite because over a 10-year span, you actually spend less when you factor in the staining, sealing, and board replacement that wood demands.

How do I maintain my new deck railing?

Cable railing systems are about as low-maintenance as it gets. Clean the cables and posts with mild soap and water a couple times a year to remove pollen and dirt — a soft cloth or sponge is all you need. Once a year, check the cable tension by pressing on each run; if a cable deflects more than a few inches, tighten the turnbuckle fitting at the end. Our team walks you through this at the final walkthrough, and we offer annual inspection visits for Marietta clients who want a professional check. Stainless steel cables don't rust, so there's no painting, staining, or coating required.

Can I add a deck over my existing patio?

Yes, and we do this regularly for Marietta homeowners who want to upgrade from a concrete slab to a composite deck surface. The process starts with a structural load assessment of your existing patio to determine whether it can serve as a foundation or if we need to install independent footings alongside it. In most cases, we build an elevated deck frame over the existing patio using pressure-treated joists and engineered footings, then install composite decking on top. This approach lets you keep the existing concrete as ground-level storage or a secondary patio area underneath the new deck.

Where can I find deck builders in Marietta near me?

Need Construction serves all of Marietta and the surrounding Cobb County area, including East Cobb, West Marietta, Kennesaw, Smyrna, and Vinings. We're a local crew — not a franchise — with over 8 years of experience building decks and porches across the metro Atlanta area.
