Luxury Outdoor Kitchen Design & Construction

Johns Creek homeowners don't settle for cookie-cutter backyards — and neither do we. Our custom outdoor kitchens are designed from the ground up to match your home's architecture, your cooking style, and the way you actually entertain.

A great outdoor kitchen starts with the right materials and a plan that accounts for how North Georgia's weather actually behaves. We build with natural stone veneer and cultured stone finishes that handle freeze-thaw cycles, summer downpours, and the UV exposure that comes with Georgia's long sunny seasons. Our countertop selections — granite, soapstone, and polished concrete — are chosen specifically for outdoor durability, not just looks. They resist heat from grills, won't stain from marinades, and clean up easily after a neighborhood cookout.

Built-in appliances are where outdoor kitchens go from nice to transformational. We integrate professional-grade grills from brands like Lynx, DCS, and Alfresco, along with pizza ovens, side burners, outdoor refrigeration, and kegerator setups. Every appliance gets proper utility hookups — dedicated gas lines, 20-amp electrical circuits, and plumbing for sinks and ice makers — all routed and permitted to Johns Creek code requirements. No extension cords, no propane tank swaps, no shortcuts.

For homeowners who want to entertain year-round, our custom fireplace and chimney integrations turn an outdoor kitchen into a true four-season living space. Stone fireplaces built into the kitchen structure provide warmth on November evenings along the Chattahoochee corridor, while gas-start fire features offer convenience without the ash cleanup. We handle the full structural engineering, chimney design, and safety clearances required by Fulton County — including the setback distances that trip up less experienced contractors.

Premium Pool Decks & Above Ground Pool Surrounds

Whether you're building around a new in-ground pool or upgrading an existing above ground pool with a wraparound deck, Need Construction delivers pool deck solutions engineered for safety, durability, and the kind of finished look that makes your backyard the neighborhood gathering spot.

Above ground pools with deck surrounds have become one of the most requested projects in Johns Creek — and for good reason. A well-designed deck transforms a basic above ground pool into something that looks and functions like a permanent installation. We build custom framing that wraps the pool at rim height, creating a flat deck surface for lounging, grilling, and safe entry via wide steps with integrated handrails. Every deck is engineered to carry the live loads that come with pool-adjacent structures — wet surfaces, foot traffic, furniture, and Georgia's occasional ice loads.

Material selection is critical for pool decks. Water, chlorine, sunscreen, and bare feet create a demanding environment that not every decking product can handle. We work primarily with slip-resistant travertine pavers for hardscape pool surrounds and Deckorators mineral-based composite for elevated deck structures. Travertine stays cooler than concrete in direct sun — a genuine comfort difference when the deck surface hits 140 degrees on an August afternoon. Composite decking handles the constant moisture exposure without the warping, splitting, or annual sealing that pressure-treated lumber demands.

Safety isn't optional on pool decks. Fulton County requires self-closing, self-latching gates on all pool enclosures, and railing height must meet code minimums. We install custom railing systems including stainless steel cable railing and tempered glass panels that provide safety without blocking the views that make your backyard feel open. Every pool deck project includes a structural engineering review, proper footings sized for the soil conditions common in Johns Creek, and a final inspection to verify full code compliance.

Above Ground Pool Decks

Custom wraparound decks that make above ground pools look and feel permanent. Engineered framing, rim-height surfaces, and integrated steps with safety gates.

Slip-Resistant Surfaces

Travertine pavers and textured composite decking that stay cool and slip-resistant — even when wet. Safety and comfort engineered for Georgia's pool season.

Cable & Glass Railing

Modern cable railing and tempered glass panel systems that meet code requirements without blocking views. Stainless steel hardware built to last in a pool environment.

Structural Engineering

Every pool deck gets a structural review with footings engineered for Johns Creek soil conditions. Built to handle live loads, moisture exposure, and decades of Georgia weather.

"It's tough to find people you feel like you can trust not to try and get over on you. I spoke with Wes about work I needed to get done and was surprised at his level of honesty and professionalism. Putting that with the word of mouth on the quality of his work... and I wouldn't/won't hesitate to work with him on my next project."

"We had a major project to be undertaken. Need construction to the rescue!! We had water damage to some of the framing on the home exterior and major deck demo and rebuild. They handled it all. I had some unique requests that I wanted installed on my deck. The DekDrain rain system along with the full composite Dekorators Summit boards and railing with a cocktail rail was our desire. We also had to have a concrete patio area below. Wes and his team made it all happen. The subframe was built with better materials that any other contractor had even offered and I was impressed with that alone. I have no doubt that hurricane force winds would have no effect on this fortress of a deck. Even the city inpectors were wowed by the build quality. The craftsmanship and finishing of the final product is top tier. They will take the time to make sure it's your dream come true."

FAQ

Outdoor Kitchen & Pool Deck Questions

Answers from our outdoor living specialists about design, materials, costs, and timelines for Johns Creek homeowners.

How much does a custom outdoor kitchen cost in Johns Creek?

Custom outdoor kitchens in Johns Creek typically range from $15,000 to $70,000 or more depending on scope, materials, and appliance selections. A basic setup with a built-in grill, countertop, and stone veneer base starts around $15,000-$25,000. Mid-range projects with refrigeration, sinks, and premium granite or soapstone countertops fall in the $30,000-$50,000 range. Full luxury builds with pizza ovens, kegerators, and custom chimney fireplaces in neighborhoods like St. Ives and Country Club of the South push past $60,000. We provide detailed line-item estimates after an on-site consultation so you know exactly where every dollar goes.

Do I need a permit for an outdoor kitchen or pool deck in Johns Creek?

Yes — most outdoor kitchen and pool deck projects in Johns Creek require building permits from the city's Community Development department. Any work involving gas lines, plumbing, electrical, or structural construction triggers permit requirements under Fulton County building codes. The good news is Need Construction handles the entire permitting process for you. We prepare site plans, submit applications, and schedule all required inspections so your project stays code-compliant from the ground up. We've pulled permits on hundreds of projects across Johns Creek and know exactly what the inspectors expect.

What are the best materials for a pool deck in Georgia?

For Georgia's heat and humidity, we recommend travertine pavers, Deckorators composite decking, and textured concrete overlays as the top pool deck materials. Travertine stays noticeably cooler underfoot than concrete or brick — a real advantage when surface temps hit 140+ degrees in July. It's also naturally slip-resistant when wet. Composite decking like Deckorators offers the warm look of wood without the annual sealing and splintering, and it handles Georgia humidity without warping. For homeowners on a tighter budget, stamped and textured concrete gives you a slip-resistant surface with decorative options at a lower per-square-foot cost.

Can you build a deck for an existing above ground pool?

Absolutely — we custom-design decks to wrap around existing above ground pools, creating a seamless transition that makes the pool look and feel like a permanent in-ground installation. We engineer the structural framing to handle the additional load near the pool wall, install safety-compliant railing with self-closing gates per Fulton County code, and build the deck height to match the pool rim for easy entry. Our above ground pool deck projects in Johns Creek typically include integrated steps, built-in benches, and options for shade structures or privacy screening.

What is the difference between 3-tab and architectural shingles for an outdoor structure roof?

For outdoor kitchen roofs, pavilion covers, and pool house structures, the choice comes down to wind resistance, aesthetics, and lifespan. 3-tab shingles are the flat, uniform style — they're rated for 60-70 mph winds and last 15-20 years. Architectural shingles (also called dimensional or laminated) have a thicker, layered profile that handles 110-130 mph winds and lasts 25-30+ years. For outdoor structures in Johns Creek that take direct weather exposure without the protection of surrounding trees or adjacent buildings, we generally recommend architectural shingles. The cost difference is modest — roughly $15-25 more per square — but the durability upgrade is significant.

How long does it take to build an outdoor kitchen?

Most custom outdoor kitchen projects in Johns Creek take 3-6 weeks from groundbreaking to your first cookout. The design and permitting phase typically adds 2-3 weeks upfront. The actual build breaks down roughly as: foundation and utility rough-in (week 1), masonry and structural framing (weeks 2-3), countertop installation and appliance fitting (week 4), then final utility connections and finish work. Complex projects with fireplaces, full roofing, or integration with pool deck construction can extend to 8-10 weeks. We provide a detailed project timeline during the design phase so you can plan around it.

Are outdoor kitchens worth the investment?

In the Johns Creek and North Atlanta market, outdoor kitchens consistently deliver strong returns. According to recent real estate data, well-built outdoor living spaces recoup 55-75% of their cost at resale — and in premium neighborhoods like St. Ives, Rivermont, and along the Chattahoochee corridor, they can be the feature that moves a listing faster than comparable homes without one. Beyond resale, homeowners tell us the lifestyle value is where the real payoff lives. Johns Creek's mild springs and long falls give you 8-9 months of comfortable outdoor entertaining weather, which means your kitchen gets used — not just admired.

Do you offer financing for outdoor living projects?

Yes, we offer flexible financing options to help Johns Creek homeowners bring their outdoor living vision to life without waiting. Our lending partners provide terms up to 84 months with competitive rates, and most approvals come back within minutes. Many of our clients also bundle outdoor kitchen projects with pool deck construction, roofing, or patio work to get more value from a single project mobilization.
